The advocacy division of PMHCA is comprised of three individuals, Matthew Groff, recovery specialist, Daniel Craig, recovery specialist, and Wendy Wood, Director of Advocacy. Each of these individuals works ardently to represent individual consumers who are attempting to create meaningful recoveries for themselves or who may be assisting others in their individual journeys. Matthew and Dan work as recovery specialists. They are members of the Community Resource Team that follows individuals after their discharge from the now closed Harrisburg State Hospital. It is the job of the recovery specialist to support the consumer in maintaining his/her voice as their individual recovery plans are developed. Their job is to also insure that recovery principles are actually implemented in the communities that are currently serving the consumer, that consumers actually receive treatment that is helpful and makes a difference, and to help be a bridge/dialogue in creating a useful solution where differences exist between provider and consumer, consumer and consumer, consumer and family. They also inform people about Advanced Directives, and Wellness Recovery Action Plans. They must be skillful in working with other members of the CRT team which includes psychiatrists, social workers, psychiatric aides, nurses, psychologists, occupational therapists, and administrators. These are extremely creative, thoughtful, individuals whose daily job requires patience, flexibility, and no small amount of humor. They work to hold hope for those they serve until they can hold it for themselves and pass it on. Wendy Wood, is the supervisor for the other three individuals, works on information and referral and advocacy cases, coordinates the advocacy division overall, and along with the other two individuals represents the PMHCA membership on various statewide committees, boards, and teams.
