Block Grant and Budget News

Dated: April 1, 2013

The Behavioral Health Coalition sent a letter to all members of the General Assembly asking them to support restoration of the 10% cuts to community-based mental health programs. Funding for these programs was reduced by 10 percent in the budget enacted in fiscal year 2012-2013, and restoration was not included in Governor Corbett’s proposed budget for 2013-2014.

Take Action – Contact your legislators

PMHCA, as a part of the Coalition, urges you to talk to, write or email your legislators and ask them to restore the 10% mental health cuts. See county snapshot budget cut document for information about how cuts are implemented in your county.

It is important that people who use community mental health services know what their counties' plans contain. Providing feedback to County Commissioners, to local advocacy organizations, advisory committees and to providers of services will be helpful as these plans are implemented.

Information about the 20 counties that chose and were selected to implement the new "Human Services Block Grant" can be found on the PA County Commissioners Association Web site. You will find the accepted plans and the approval letters from the Department of Public Welfare.

Governor Corbett will unveil his budget proposal for fiscal year 2013/2014 on February 5. Stay tuned to the PMHCA Web site and watch your emails for more information as the proposal is analyzed. Check your local television stations and the PA Cable Network schedules to find out if they will be airing or streaming the Governor's address.
