Pennsylvania Mental Health Consumers' Association has received a three-year Consumer Network Grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. We will work with Mental Health Association in PA to collaborate with NAMI Keystone PA and Disability Rights Pennsylvania on enhancement of our current Mental Health Advance Directive training and to offer new training opportunities. Pennsylvania Mental Health Consumers' Association will begin by offering a refresher course for current Mental Health Advance Directive trainers, followed by offering the trainings statewide to new trainers and to peers and others who will assist individuals with SMIs to recognize their ability to plan for future treatment needs in the event of a mental health crisis.

The Statewide Consumer Network Grant provided by SAMHSA allows us to offer this Mental Health Advance Directive Refresher Course free of charge.

Background:

Pennsylvania residents with serious mental illnesses (SMIs) have the legal option to create a Mental Health Advance Directive, as created by Act 194 and implemented in 2005. The Mental Health Advance Directive provides individuals with the opportunity to make mental health treatment decisions in advance of potential incapacitation, or inability to make such decisions.

We have three primary goals:

We invite CPSs and other mental health professionals to join us in our pursuit to provide quality trainings informed by the mental health recovery community.
